Open Rhinoplasty vs. Closed Rhinoplasty

The mirror can either be your best friend or your worst enemy. It all depends on if you like what looks back at you or if you hate it. Usually, when a person hates what is looking back at them in the mirror, it is not because they hate the way their entire face looks. Instead, it is because they hate the way one feature of their face looks. More times than not, that feature is their nose.

For this reason, rhinoplasty is one of the most popular forms of cosmetic surgery available today. Rhinoplasty can be performed in an open or closed procedure.

Open vs. Closed Rhinoplasty

While these terms might sound complex, they simply describe the two options that are available for the rhinoplasty surgery. They describe the approach that our cosmetic surgeon will use to access the cartilage and skeletal framework of the nose.

Endonasal Rhinoplasty

This is also known as closed rhinoplasty. This is because the surgeon will make all of the incisions inside the nostrils. It is impossible to see the incision externally, and any scarring is on the inside of the nose.

One of the challenges with the closed approach is correctly repositioning the nasal skin since the entire procedure is done through very small surgical openings and with limited visibility.

Because of the rigors of the procedure, many patients have nasal cartilage distortion when rhinoplasty is performed using the closed approach.

External Rhinoplasty

Open rhinoplasty is performed by making a small incision in the tissue that connects the left and right nostril. Once this incision has been made, the cosmetic surgeon has visibility of the entire nasal framework.

Since the cosmetic surgeon has improved surgical access to the area they are treating, the job is more accurate, more effective and a wider range of problems can be treated.

Most cosmetic surgeons prefer the open rhinoplasty treatment as it allows them to engage in a precise re-engineering of the patient’s nose, providing the patient with better results.

The Importance of a Skilled Surgeon

The success of any cosmetic procedure is based primarily on the skill of the surgeon who is performing the procedure. Dr. Wendell Perry, our board-certified plastic surgeon, is committed to performing effective and safe procedures in a way that makes it look like the patient had no work done at all.

His unique ability to understand not only the medical aspect of the procedure, but also to firmly grasp the aesthetics of the human face, is just one of the traits that make Dr. Perry so credible.

There is nothing worse than looking in the mirror and seeing something that you don’t like looking back at you. Open or closed rhinoplasty procedures allow you to correct defects with your nose and produce a symmetrical face that you can be happy to look at every day.
